Choosing Care · 5 min read · By the Senior Living USA Team
A brochure shows the best side of a community. A tour is your chance to see daily life. Bring a list of questions, and take your time.
Before You Go
- Visit more than once, at different times of day
- Bring your loved one if they are able
- Take notes, and ask if you can take photos
Daily Life
- What does a typical day look like for residents?
- Can residents keep their own routines for waking, meals, and bedtime?
- What activities are offered, and do residents seem to enjoy them?
- Can I see a menu and join a meal?
Staffing and Care
- How many staff are on each shift, including nights and weekends?
- How long have staff members worked here?
- How is the care plan created, and how often is it reviewed?
- What happens if care needs increase?
What to Notice
- Do staff greet residents by name and speak kindly?
- Does the community look and smell clean?
- Do residents look comfortable and engaged?
- How do staff respond when someone asks for help?
If something does not feel right, it is okay to keep looking. The right fit is the place where your loved one feels safe and respected.
Cost and Contract
- What is included in the monthly price, and what costs extra?
- What fees apply at move-in?
- What is the policy if your loved one needs to move out?
